Maximizing Storage and Space in a Small Bathroom

When we purchased our home, one of the first things on my to-do list was to save money for a bathroom renovation. I felt like there was no way we could make the existing space work for our family, and that a renovation would take us from tiny dungeon bathroom to bright and organized oasis. One of the best pieces of advice I received when speaking with homeowners was to live in a space for a while and see how it functions for your family before deciding on any construction projects. I am so glad we listened to this! After living here for just a short time, I realized that our bathroom really only needed some small tweaks to make it a beautiful and functional space. Here, I will outline some of the things we did to maximize storage, and change the entire look of our room, without investing in a renovation.

  1. Painting

First things first, we chose paint to transform the room. The gray on the walls was only making the tight space feel smaller and darker. A crisp white (Pure White by Sherwin Williams) instantly brightened the room and made the space feel fresh. See the images for a before and after of the space. Paint made a huge difference!

2. Remove Glass Shower Door

Removing the glass shower door made our bathroom feel twice the size! Having the etched glass blocking light from the only window kept the room dark, and stopped the eye before the room ended. Taking the door off also made showering more enjoyable- no more hitting elbows on the glass while shampooing, or bumping shins on the metal rails while getting in and out. We also swapped out the shower head for one with a filter (this makes your hair and skin feel great!) and a hose. Here is a before and after with the glass door taken off.

3. Closet Organizing

Deciding to get this closet organized has given us much more space, and less headache! Each basket is labeled so nothing is ever lost. We decided to organize by the following categories: self care, medicine, first aid, dental care, Grace, Nick, Peppermint, hair tools/ clippers, extra product, and then toilet paper and towels on the top shelf. Extra tip-stackable baskets with flat tops like the ones we found at Homegoods maximize storage capacity.

4. Add a Shelving Unit Next to The Sink

Have you ever gone to wash your hands and knocked the soap right off the sink just trying to turn the water on? Our little sink cabinet was a big culprit of this and one of the main reasons I believed we “needed” to renovate. Instead of spending a few hundred dollars on a new vanity, I decided that a shelf next to the sink could solve our soap problem and give us more storage. We purchased this piece from Amazon, I loved that the bamboo reminded me of a spa, and brought warmth into the room. On the top shelf we keep soap, a mirror, a plant, and when I am not photographing my bathroom for the internet, our toothbrushes. Below that is a shelf with extra towels, followed by a shelf with bath salts and on the bottom is extra toilet paper. Keeping our bath salts in an open jar makes them easily accessible and smells so good! Bonus- we also hung a hook for a hand towel next to the sink. No more drying your hands on whoever’s bath towel is closest!

Extra Changes we Made to Upgrade the Look and Function

-Swapping the vanity light bulbs for clear, round ones

-Adding plants- a lot of plants thrive being in the humidity of a bathroom

-New mirror over the sink

-Large scale artwork

-Extra towel hooks

-Painted vanity

Summer Living Room Refresh and 5 Tips to Update Your Space with the Season

Summer is by far my favorite season. Sunshine, fresh air, blooming flowers, and warm nights- I just love it all! One challenge with this time of year is creating a cozy home while keeping it fresh and bright, in tune with the season. Today I will share 5 easy tips to create a cozy and fresh living room for summer.

  1. Change Your Curtain Panels

Curtains take up a lot of real estate on your walls. A heavy blackout curtain gives a completely different feel than a breezy linen. When the change in season comes, rotating curtain panels can instantly take the feel of your room from “let’s curl up and watch the snow fall” to “let’s cool off with some sweet tea”. Over the winter we had these great buffalo check curtain panels, and we loved them! I always pair buffalo check with winter in my mind. When summer arrived we swapped them for lighter, more neutral panels that were a warmer color and felt a bit more bright and open. An easy fix that altered the space.

2. Add a “Ready to Go” Entertaining Station

As a wedding gift, my awesome sister purchased this pink cooler for us. After assembling it, we put it in the living room until we could find a home for it, and found that it was perfect right there! With our small kitchen, having a cooler stocked with sodas and water in the living room helps keep traffic out of the cramped space. Having an ice bucket and drinking glasses ready to go, is great for those impromptu summer get togethers.

3. Simplify your Coffee Table and Add Fresh Flowers

When it comes to summer decorating, lightening up spaces with color is often recommended (and a great idea!), but what can sometimes be overlooked is the the concept of lightening a room spatially. I decided to lighten our living room by removing decorative items from our coffee table, like candles and a dish that really weren’t serving any purpose. Putting fresh cut flowers and some reading material in their place was an easy swap that brought nature in, and gave some room to breathe.

4. Rearrange Decor Pieces- Take Some out of Rotation

Last week while cleaning, as I spent time going room by room, I noticed our home was stuck in a bit of a decor rut. I wanted to bring things into summer, but wasn’t necessarily interested in investing any money on new items. I decided to play a game (with myself) called “Add, Change, or Take Away”. Each room I cleaned, I gave myself the task of adding a new summer item, changing something that wasn’t summery with something that was, or taking an item away that just didn’t need to be there. I found this to be a great way to breathe new life into each room just using the items I had!

5. Change Up Pillows and Blankets

Lastly, changing blankets and pillows is an easy and fun way to decorate for summer. I traded our fluffy blankets for muslin and knit ones and added some pops of color.

Thank you for reading! I hope you found these tips helpful, I would love to know your favorite thing about summer!

Garage Makeover Reveal

This summer we set out to give our exterior some much needed attention. There were a couple aluminum awnings, some plastic shutters, and faded vinyl that weren’t doing much for first impressions. I was so ready to accomplish this project and excited to get started! And then..the doubt kicked in.

“Do I know how to use a paint sprayer?” “Will I pick the right paint colors?” “What if I do a bad job, then everyone on the street will see?” This was the dialogue that started to run though my mind. It is much less pressure trying something new, inside the privacy of your home. If your idea flops, you can easily change course before anyone sees. Outside on the front of your home, it feels like a stage!

In order to test out our skills and selections we decided that our detached garage would be a great place to start. This is where I could teach myself the best method to clean and paint vinyl and Nick could learn to build a pergola..a couple of the things that we are planning to do to our home. We could also see if we liked the way things were coming together. Now, a week later we finished this flip and love it! I am confident in our ability to take on our home and breathe a new life into it! Here is a before and after of what we did:

After

One of the things that is important to keep in mind when changing your exterior is the style of your home. Our house is a little ranch in a neighborhood with identical houses. When deciding our design direction we didn’t want to venture into styles that wouldn’t lend themselves to our neighborhood, for example: craftsman, or ultra modern. Instead we wanted to embrace the cute and “cottagy” feel of these little houses and lean into it.

The first thing we did was wash the vinyl with a brush and vinyl cleaner. It was important to use a cleaner with a mildew/mold killer in order for the paint to adhere properly to the vinyl. On the right side of this photo you can see where we had scrubbed…this was satisfying!

After the scrubbing was complete we were ready to paint. I love the timelessness of a white house. It acts as the perfect backdrop for interesting light fixtures, front door colors and plants. We decided to use a sprayer from Lowes to make the job easier and it was such a time saver! We even started with one sprayer and exchanged it for another. Spending the extra $20 for a better model was so worth it!

Nick is so good at projects! He installed this new light fixture for us and even built a pergola over our garage door. When looking at pergola kits the prices averaged at around $1,500, we were able to build ours for $75. I purchased a climbing arbor rose and I am so excited to watch it grow around this.

Close up of the plants we chose. I love the way these bright roses pop against the white.

I love the new view I have out of our kitchen window when finishing up the dishes at night and getting ready for bed.

There it is! A full garage makeover that we did ourselves!

Thank you for reading! Are there any projects at your home that you want to try but might be intimidated by? I have to say, this made me feel brave enough to attempt mine!

Summer Bedroom Tour and Five Tips For A Relaxing Space

Your bedroom is such an important part of your home. More than any other space, this room should reflect YOU, and give you feelings of peace. At the end of a long day there is nothing like entering your bedroom, shutting the door, crawling into your sheets and unwinding. Here are five tips to make sure your bedroom is your own oasis, no matter what your style is. Scroll to the bottom for a before and after of this space!

1. Comfy Bedding

We all have different preferences when it comes to bedding. Some people love the weight of a heavy down blanket, while others prefer just using a flat sheet to cover themselves at night. By layering your bed with different blankets, you have the option to adjust how much or little warmth you need. A quilt, a comforter or duvet, and an extra blanket gives you the perfect amount of options (and makes for a pretty bed!). Finally, a soft pair of sheets and silk pillowcases are two more “must haves” for maximum comfort. We spend 1/3 of our lives in bed…we might as well make it a great place to be!

2. Keep a Clean Room

This is not the most exciting tip on the list but it may be the most important! A clean room is crucial to creating a relaxing space. When surrounded by clutter and mess our brains have a hard time slowing down. The “touch it once” rule is a great reminder to help us stay on top of a clean room. As soon as you are done with an item of clothing it should be put away or directly in a hamper. This goes for anything we might accumulate in our bedrooms, such as cups for water, shoes, purses, you name it! Regularly washing sheets, dusting, and vacuuming will all make a big difference. Coming into your space and not seeing anything that might be on your “to do” list will give your mind permission to unwind.

3. A Live Plant

Live plants offer so many benefits to a space. Keeping a plant in your bedroom is an inexpensive way to change the atmosphere entirely. They are great for air quality and most importantly bring nature inside.

4. Functional Decor

A rule of thumb I try to follow in our home is that most decor items should have a function. Sure, there are some items I love to display just because I like them, but usually, I don’t purchase or display something unless it is purposeful. For example, candles, flowers, diffusers, etc. are all items that are beautiful and serve a purpose. In our bedroom the items taking up space on our surfaces have reason for being there. Coasters, a plant, a diffuser and lamps are all we have on our end tables, while the dresser has a plant and a salt lamp. Keeping the surfaces clear of anything that we don’t use helps to give the room space to breathe, and keeps it light. It also encourages us to curate the items we are displaying to things we absolutely love.

The hats on our wall we wore on our honeymoon! I love the texture they add to the walls and the fact that they hold a special memory.

5. Mood lighting

In any room using lamps before turning overhead lighting on is great for creating a cozy atmosphere, this is especially true in bedrooms. Unless I am cleaning or looking for something at night, I almost never turn the overhead light on. We have three lamps in our room with warm bulbs which we use 90% of the time.

Additionally having a mood lighting option is great for a bedroom. We have a salt lamp on our dresser that casts a warm glow. I love using this when I am winding down, or want a night light. The glow from the salt lamp is so relaxing!

Transforming Our Interior Doors

Doors and hardware can make such a huge difference in your home! After moving in, Nick and I realized our doors were in need of a major overhaul. We decided to look into the cost of replacing them and soon realized that new doors were out of our budget. I took to the internet and started searching “ways to update interior doors”, and found there were so many helpful tutorials! Feeling confident with the knowledge I gained from these tutorials, I decided that upgrading the doors was a project I wanted to take on myself. I am so glad I did! Below is an image of our hallway with the new (updated) doors and an image below with the old ones. See the difference?

Updated Doors Installed
Doors Before

Here Is a (light) Rundown on how we Achieved this Look:

  1. Remove the doors from their hinges and take off all hardware, including the door knob
  2. Sand down the entire door
  3. Measure and mark 4.5″ in from all sides of the door and draw lines to connect these marks (I used a large T Square). This will create a rectangle drawing the shape of the door but smaller. At the center of the knob, measure and mark 2.25″ up and 2.25″ down (total 4.5″) for the distance between the top and bottom panel. Draw straight lines from the marks to create two separate (upper and lower panel) rectangles.
  4. Cut trim wood the length of the marks. We purchased our trim pieces from Lowes, they have so many options so you can customize the look you would like. We used a handheld miter cutter, to make 45 degree angles, that we found at Lowes. It was SO helpful and inexpensive!
  5. Use wood glue to adhere the trim pieces to the door
  6. Use painters tape to keep the glued pieces from shifting
  7. Put a flat surface on the glued pieces and weigh it down- make sure there is even pressure
  8. Caulk where the trim pieces meet the door
  9. Prime door
  10. Apply three coats of paint (paint works best in thin coats that are built upon one another)
  11. Install doors on hinges
  12. Install knobs
  13. Enjoy your beautiful doors!

Some helpful Tips!

  • Work room by room when updating doors. I liked to complete a set of doors, then move on to the next room. This prevents multiple rooms from having a door, at one time.
  • A light sanding between each coat of paint can help for a smooth finish
  • It is important to let each coat dry before applying the next – follow the instructions on the paint
  • Use a foam roller
Office

For paint we used Benjamin Moore Advance in Chantilly Lace. I find the Advance line to be the best paint for doors, cabinets, and furniture.

Coat Closet

Part of upgrading the doors was installing new hardware. We chose these beautiful matte black knobs from Lowes that unlike our previous knobs, actually have locks for the bedrooms.

Helpful Tips to Plan for a Successful Week

As someone who loves projects I find myself constantly working on a “to-do” list. Sometimes, at the start of the week it can feel overwhelming trying to figure out when I will have time to tackle each task! I also get really excited and super motivated for the things I want to do, like work on our home, and tend to push off the not so great things such as go to the DMV.

Fortunately, I have found several tools that have changed my life, and have helped me feel in control of my timeline. Here I will break down how I try to prepare our family for a successful week. I would like to note that I am not an expert at any of these, just sharing what I have been trying out and liking!

Tip #1: Pick One Day to Clean the House

For me, Monday is my day to wake up, pour a cup of coffee, and clean our home. I go through each room and wipe down cased goods, windex the glass, vacuum the rugs, wash the floors, empty trash bins, and throw any sheets or towels in the laundry, etc. It usually takes about 3 hours by the time I am done. Cleaning is something I enjoy doing because the work put in is so rewarding! Throughout the week when clutter can start to accumulate, it is a great way to reset the space and not let anything begin to pile up. After our home is clean, it gives us a fresh slate to head into the week. Nick and I really appreciate a clean place to relax at the end of a long day.

Tip #2: Fill Out a Schedule for Each Day

For some, this may be an old-school way to manage your calendar. Many people choose to plan their weeks out on their phone or computer, which is another efficient way to stay organized. I however, am a pen and paper kind of girl! At the start of each week I print out hourly calendars for each day. This has been incredibly helpful for figuring out when I will have time to do each task. It helps to start with “anchor times”. Anchor times are consistent times each day that you typically do something, such as wake up at 7 am and have lunch at 1 pm, etc. After you fill out anchor times, fill in your reoccurring weekly commitments such as church, grocery shop, or clean. Once those times are filled in, fill in your top priority tasks for the week, such as go to the DMV or write thank you letters. After those are entered, you will have a visual understanding of what time is leftover for your creative or social times. Here is an example of a filled out schedule and a blank one, incase you are interested in trying this out yourself! I don’t typically color code my calendars, but for this example I color coded them by Anchor Times, Reoccurring, Priority, and Creative.

Tip #3: Meal Plan for the Week

“What would you like for dinner?” “I don’t know, what would you like” “…I don’t know…” Is this conversation familiar to you? I know in our home we’ve had this conversation often! I recently decided to give meal planning a try and let me tell you it has been a game changer for us! I don’t mean meal planning like cooking a gallon of rice on Sunday with chicken and vegetables and dividing it into containers for the week. I mean writing out what you will prepare for each meal everyday. Not only has this saved time, it has saved us so much money! Writing out each meal (and plugging in times we will be eating out) has given me a visual of what ingredients I am buying, because of this I am able to group ingredients and use them several times each week. This makes creating a grocery list a breeze, and helps to know what quantity of each item to buy, so nothing is wasted. For example: last week for dinner I made chicken, broccoli and rice. I purposely made extra, so the next day I was able to turn those ingredients into fried rice for a couple more dinners and a lunch. Below is this weeks meal plan, and a blank copy incase you would like to fill one in for yourself!

Tip #4: Restock Envelopes

Our goal this summer was to be better stewards of our income. As good as we tried to be with spending, we found ourselves often going over budget. We decided to try the envelope system and have found that it works amazingly well for us! Most of our bills come directly from our accounts, so we are well prepared for those and didn’t incorporate those costs into our envelopes. The things that were sneaking up on us were the out of pocket costs like groceries, or even trips to Target. We broke our spending down into categories and made an envelope for each one. Some examples were groceries, eating out, entertainment, etc. We then decided on an amount we would be comfortable spending each week on that category, based on our income. At the start of each week I restock our envelopes with the cash budgeted for that week. Once the cash in that envelope is spent, we are done spending in that category until the next time we restock it (once a week in our case). This has not only helped us stay on budget, but has helped us be more thoughtful on where we were prioritizing our resources.

Tip #5: Spend a Couple Minutes Now to Save Hours Later

The final tip is a day to day habit that efficient people tend to follow. As the title explains, spend a couple minutes now to save hours later. Loading the dishwasher at the end of each meal or getting rid of the mail as soon as you open it will take a couple extra minutes in the present, but will save you hours of doing dishes or sorting through a pile of paper on your counter later.

I hope you enjoyed these tips! Let me know if you tried any and if they worked for you!

5 Ways to Transform a Room…Without Breaking the Bank

When we bought our little ranch house there were so many things we wanted to get started on right away! Each room felt like a blank canvas that was waiting to be changed. This list will break down 5 things we did in our living room to make it feel brand new, clean, and like home. Down the road we have some bigger, more involved projects for this space, but these are things we did for that “instant gratification,” “now we can relax” type feelings..

  1. Paint

This one gives the BIGGEST impact in a space. Not only does paint bring new life and energy to a room, it also is great at making a room feel clean and fresh. Painting the walls and trim a bright neutral pallet helps to set the tone for a relaxing space. My rule of thumb when selecting color is to go neutral and bright in common spaces such as the living room and kitchen and then choose your more bold colors in less central rooms such as an office or powder room. For our living room we chose Drift of Mist by Sherwin Williams for the walls and Trim White for the trim. Below is a before and after with our new paint colors.

After of the Same Angle (Featuring our Cutie Dog)

2. Replace all Vent, Outlet, and Switch Covers

This is one of the least expensive ways to make an impact on a space. Even during my renting days, I would change switch and outlet covers in my apartments to a bright, crisp white. The vent covers in all of our rooms had been painted over each time someone had picked a new color for their walls, and had a thick coating of paint that was impossible to clean. New vent covers made a huge difference! Bonus- removing the old covers to replace them let us see all the dust hiding in our vents…we thoroughly vacuumed each of them out, which I am sure helped air quality.

3. Window Treatments

My favorite tip for any room is free: natural light, and fresh air. That combo can drastically improve any environment. When selecting window treatments, the goal is to emphasize the elements that bring in that natural light. That means hanging curtains higher, and wider than the window frame. In the front of our home where we need a bit more privacy, in addition to curtain panels, shades that are light filtering, but don’t cover much of the glass are ideal. Before, the widow treatments were hung low, always covering a part of the window even when “open.” Here is my favorite illustration of this concept- simple and to the point.

4. Rearrange the Furniture

We laid out each room in our home different than the previous owner. Not that they were “wrong” with how they had it, but we were excited to try something new! With the living room, we rearranged the the space to fit it best for how it would function: entertaining, conversation, and let’s be honest, TV watching. I liked the idea that when you entered the room, the first thing you would see was comfy, inviting sofa. Try arranging your furniture in a bunch of different ways, you may find a new way that works better than what you have, or realize it is perfect the way it is!

Before
After

5. Add an Area Rug

A sure-fire way to ground a space and pull it together is with an area rug. Without one, furniture can feel like it is “floating” in the room, without being part of a group. The rug we purchased has no pile and is great for families with pets or children. Many people choose to select a rug as a starting to establish color, feel, and direction. It is important to choose a rug that is the correct size! At minimum, the front legs of each piece of furniture in the intended grouping need to be on the rug…think of it like not leaving anyone out of the conversation. I found this helpful chart on Pinterest that works as a guide. (Notice the 6’x6′ grouping looks a bit awkward)

I hope these tips were helpful to you! I would love to hear if you tried any and how they worked for you!

Exterior Renovation Ideas

Summer is here! For us that means less time indoors and more time enjoying the fresh air, nice weather, and yard. It also means more time to stare at our exterior and daydream about renovation plans. I love to visualize our ideas, and find that powerpoint works great to create a vision board. During my professional design days I would fully render exteriors and be able to insert materials and colors to the 1/16″ for full accuracy. For a project as simple as ours, a rough image is more than enough to get the ball rolling. Below is an image of our current exterior. A simple ranch with vinyl siding, aluminum overhangs, and fake shutters (one of my biggest pet peeves with our exterior!).

Our budget for this project includes simple and affordable changes that will hopefully have a big impact!

Here is an image I created in Powerpoint of the look we are going for: (It is nothing fancy, but gives the idea!)

Here is a basic rundown of the items on our list:

  1. Remove awnings and fake shutters
  2. Patch necessary spots
  3. Paint whole house and trim white
  4. Paint front door and overhang Iced Marble by Benjamin Moore
  5. Paint steps and remove railings
  6. New mailbox, house numbers, light, and door knocker
  7. Add walnut window boxes
  8. Add arbor with climbing plant around doorway
  9. Update landscaping (next summer project!)

Not too bad of a list! We will be using wedding gift cards and DIY’ing all of this so it should be a fun, budget friendly job with a big impact!

I cant wait to get started and will update with an “after” picture when we have finished.
